The two basic categories of flagpoles are

• External Halyard (rope is outside of the flagpole, tied off to a cleat) — Their ropes are made of diamond-braided polyester.
• Internal Halyard flagpoles (rope or stainless steel line is inside the flagpole, the flag is raised or lowered with a winch or by hand and secured with a cam cleat). — You may find it in either wired polyester rope or stainless steel. Sectional flagpoles: They are not recommended for high-wind areas but can be dispersed to control damage to the flagpole and encompassing area.

Telescoping flagpoles: These come with a feature of quickly being shortened in case of turbulent weather times. Also, these make them a reasonable option for high-wind areas.
